[realtek] 8139too problem on debian, but not redhat

My onboard 8139-based ethernet is working great on redhat 9 with the
8139too driver, but doesn't work on debian sarge with either 2.4 or
2.6 kernels.  Can anyone help?

I get the following messages when the module loads:

ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:0d.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 201
8139too: 0000:01:0d.0: region #0 not a PIO resource, aborting.

lspci recognizes the card:

0000:01:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co, Ltd.
RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

And the module does seem to stay loaded:

% lsmod | grep 8139
8139too
