[realtek] rh6.2 8139 macaddr

I am struggling getting a change of the macaddress to work.
I am adding the line MACADDR="stuff" in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.
The new macaddress is being used, but the interface cannot receive,
unless it is in promiscuous mode. I am using a fixed ip address (in
ifcfg-eth0).

When scanning the web and newsgroups, many have been fiddling with this,
but all have been using DHCP.

I suspect initscripts (5.00-1) but I am close to give up.
rtl8399.c ver 1.07.

Any sugestions welcome.
