Do I have a faulty SMC Etherpower II?

Hi,

I am trying to network two machines directly, via a crossover cable, but
am unable to achieve link integrity.

One machine has a 3com 3c905B, which functions OK on another network.
The other has an SMC Etherpower II, running the latest available
epic100.c from cesdis, (same result with the version shipping with
2.2.12). This card/machine will not achieve link to a 10/100 hub on
another network.

The crossover cable has been tested OK.

The only LED on the card that is lit, is the "100" one, although if I
attempt to ping from this machine, the "T/R' one flickers.

I have tried booting one machine from cold, before the other.

Here is the relevant part of dmesg:

eth1: SMSC EPIC/100 83c170 at 0xc4804000, IRQ 9, 00:e0:29:1c:63:21.

Here is the relevant part of ifconfig:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:29:1C:63:21
          inet addr:192.168.0.1 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:9 Base address:0x2000

Interrupt 9 increments in /proc/interrupts, as attempts to ping out are
made.

Here is the output from mii-diag:

Basic registers of MII PHY #3: 3000 7809 0181 4401 01e1 0001 0000 ffff.
Basic mode control register 0x3000: Auto-negotiation enabled.
 Basic mode status register 0x7809 ... 7809.
   Link status: not established.

Have I missed anything?

Any advice will be greatfully received.
