No MII transceiver found

I've tried every module option for the epic100 driver. (Ver. 1.6)  No
matter what I do, I get the message:

***WARNING***: No MII transceiver found!

I've also used the mii-diag utility to try and force the media type, but I
get the same error.

The exact card I am using is the SMC EtherPower II 10/100 (SMC9432TX).
The LAN is 10baseT.  As far as I can tell there are no hardware conflicts;
the same box is duel-bootable for win98, which will recognize and use the
card.  I'm stuck.  What am I overlooking?
