[eepro100] Entire 82801BA/BAM/CA/CAM system locks

Hi,

I've installed Debian testing on an Acer Aspire 1400 Laptop, which
appears to have a NIC integrated with the motherboard,
82801BA/BAM/CA/CAM. The kernel is Debian precompiled 2.6.5-1-686, but
I've also tried 2.4.26-1-686 and I get the same symptoms. The NIC
generally works, but if there is much traffic the entire system freezes;
there is no response from the keyboard and mouse, and it does not reply
to pings. (e100 also works, but worse than eepro100, and it also
freezes the system. Booting with acpi=off or noapic does not improve
things. The system is dual-boot and it doesn't show any such problem
when it runs the other operating system.)

If there is only one connection, there is usually no problem. For
example, I installed the entire system from the network, and the first
time it hanged was probably when it tried to adjust the clock with nntp.
I've also downloaded a 1.5 GB file with http with no problem. The most
reliable way to freeze it is to mount an NFS system and do a find on it;
it usually freezes within 5 seconds. Sometimes I'm luckier and the
system doesn't freeze, but the NIC stops responding and I get
wait_for_cmd_done in the logs; I then restart the network and it works
again.

Searching the net I've found one or two people who've successfully
installed Linux on the same laptop, and there are no reports of any
problems. They just say "eepro100 works nicely".

I've read the archives and I understand that it may be hard to avoid
wait_for_cmd_done, but do you think I might at least avoid the freezing?
I include lots of information from my system below; lspci,
/proc/interrupts, /proc/ioports, dmesg, and an extract from syslog.
Thanks!
