What error message does the driver report?

What errors?
The usual compile instructions are:

mkdir /tmp/netdrivers/
cd /tmp/netdrivers/
ncftp ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/network/netdrivers.tgz
tar xfvz netdrivers.tgz
make
make install

That code has been in there since the very early days of the driver. I
keep that message mostly because Intel won't provide an errata list
that document that the bug was fixed.

That's my first suggestion.
