Kubuntu-derived? Would Debian not be a better way to go, as in not installing any graphical stuff unless the user needs it?
Ubuntu is a little ahead of Debian in terms of some of the cluster software it contains. For example, gluster is in Ubuntu 8.10, but is not in Debian Lenny. It is in Debian's development tree, but won't hit a production Debian release for God knows how long. :-) You can always install Ubuntu without any of the GUI gubbins.
