mii-tool will show you the link status on devices that use mii
interfaces:

[root at albatros root]# mii-tool 
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok
eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok

I do wonder how you will make the node send you an e-mail if the link
fails though   ;)
