1) Learn Fortran 77  (one year should do for this purpose)
2) Learn C (not 9X)  (another few years)
3) Learn ANSI C++    (I'm on 8th year, not done yet)

Don't forget to do some bash, csh (*vomit!*), perl and Haskell on the
way too.  Just to get a taste of it  :)

Now, after that, you and only you can decide which language you should
*really* learn - and which language you should use for your projects.
