I meant something like:

export PATH=~/pvm3/lib:$PATH

did you add the PATH specification in .bash_profile and/or .profile?  
This will only work for an interactive login. AFAIR you must add it  
to .bashrc which will be sourced for a non-interactive login, i.e.  
during the pvm startup.
