You can have an inexpensive RAID-1 USB > device for the root and OS. it sounds strange, but I really like booting storage servers diskless. that is, have their OS state exported from some other machine, so all the disks in the server are purely data disks. this offers some nice properties when reconfiguring machines, even tolerating some kinds of failures. I note that this is how HP configures their SFS (product based on Lustre.) regards, mark hahn.
