Rule number 2:  after unpacking the software, and before compiling, try 
reading the errata page.   
http://www-unix.mcs.anl.gov/mpi/mpich/buglist-tbl.html .  Nice to see my 
problem handled.  I had to add

    -lib="-L/usr/local/pgi/linux86/lib -lpgftnrtl -lpgc"

Took some poking around the pgftnrtl and pgc lib symbols to see what was 
in there, to realize that I was missing those libs.  Then I re-googled ...

Yes, the examples now work.
