[ Regarding incorrect memory usage reported by Linux 'free': ] > There is a specific problem with the 2.4 kernels before 2.4.10, and > 2.4.9 specifically. Hm, I just observed the same problem with the most recent kernel 2.4.19-pre4 running on a PII/400 box with 384 MB RAM and 768 MB swap... Fortunately, running a program which requests & modifies all memory pages it can get restored the 'free' numbers to normal without reboot. It seems that this problem is not yet fixed.
